Lecture: Trends and Prospects for Saving the Whooping Crane

Federal and state officials, expert biologists, and others have been determined to save North America’s tallest bird, the Whooping Crane, from extinction.  Dating back to  the 1940s, important efforts, some unique, have been taken to safeguard this endangered bird. No other animal has been treated in such a prolonged, coordinated, and unusual manner.

Robin Doughty will describe this recovery program, the difficulties it has faced, and the current policy to establish a self-sustaining population to complement the wild migratory flock that flies 2,500 miles between nest sites in Canada and wintering habitat in Texas.
