Milkshake Book Club

Sun-warmed sand beneath your toes, salty Gulf breezes flipping the pages for you, and the soundtrack of rolling surf—Port Aransas was practically made for losing yourself in a good book. If anyone can show you how to master the art of the beach read, it’s local bibliophile Marsha Dayon, founder of the Milkshake Book Club. What began on a whim while she and a friend were whipping up milkshakes for a teacher-appreciation day (“You should start a book club!”) quickly blossomed into a monthly gathering filled with laughter, lively discussion, and a growing community of readers who trade stories as effortlessly as sea shells washing up on the beach.

Marsha’s passion for connection and her inventive tricks for keeping sand out of your spine and sweat off your pages make her the perfect guide to reading in Port A’s sun-kissed paradise. So unroll your blanket, stake that umbrella, and settle in for a good time!

Sand, Sun, & Reading Fun

We’ve all been there. You’ve got your sunglasses, the perfect suit, tanning oil, an amazing beach blanket, a drink with an umbrella, and a book. Ahhh… the perfect setup. You open your book, ready to relax.

But then… sweat starts dripping onto your pages. The sound of seagulls fills the air — first in the distance, then right next to you. You try to read, but your sunglasses make the words impossible to see. You take them off, but the sun’s too bright for your eyes to focus. So, you lay the book across your face and fall asleep.

So much for reading at the beach…

Best Ways to Read While at the Beach

As much as we love the idea of basking in the sun while reading, if you really want to get some reading done, head for the shade. The coolness of the umbrella will help your eyes, skin, and head. You’ll have access to a cooler with refreshing drinks, the sound of the waves in the…

If you can’t stand reading under a tent, try reading in the evening. There’s still enough light to read but not so much that you’ll start sweating or squinting. It’s the best time to enjoy both the sun and your book.

This one’s my favorite! It’s close enough to snacks and drinks, and you can hear the waves, smell the sea salt, and feel the warmth — heavenly. Whether it’s summer or winter, a cozy patio with a good chair and a book is a great place to read. A tip? Keep those snacks coming!

Find a pool that overlooks the beach. Set up your umbrella and chair near the water, and dip your feet in while you read. Bonus points if the cabana person knows your name! It’s the perfect way to enjoy a beach day and read at the same time. Bliss

The Newcomer

I just finished "The Newcomer" by Mary Kay Andrews. This book is perfect for reading while at the beach! It takes place in a little beach town in Florida, with crime, mystery, murder, love, romance, and family bonding — all set against the backdrop of a beachy paradise. It’s fabulous! I couldn’t put it down. Well written, easy to read, and fun. Even though it has those crime and mystery elements, it’s written in a way that doesn’t leave you feeling overwhelmed by negativity.

I found myself rooting for all the characters, although I had some thoughts about Joe... If you’ve read it, let me know what you think!

Beach Read

Currently, I’m reading "Beach Read" by Emily Henry. The first page hooks you right away: “Only now, upon realizing you didn’t know what you wanted, you’re barreling down the highway in a mid-life-crisis-mobile with a suitcase full of cash and a man named Stan in your trunk.” I was immediately hooked — this is exactly the kind of wacky thing that could happen to me in my dreams!

Emily Henry’s writing is known for being laugh-out-loud funny, and this book is no exception. It’s “steamy, smart, and perceptive,” and I can’t wait to read more at the beach!
