When to Go Crabbing

Timing makes all the difference in crabbing success. In Port Aransas:

  • Early Morning & Late Evening – Crabs are most active during cooler parts of the day, making sunrise and sunset prime crabbing times.

  • Incoming & Outgoing Tides – Moving water stirs up bait and brings crabs closer to shore. Check tide charts before heading out for the best results.

  • Summer & Early Fall – While crabbing can be enjoyed year-round, the warmer months bring more crab activity and longer, sunnier days to enjoy it.

Gear & Bait You’ll Need

Before you head out to the pier, jetty, or shoreline, it helps to gather a few essentials. The good news is that crabbing in Port Aransas is refreshingly simple, no fancy equipment required.

  • Crab Nets or Ring Traps – Simple, easy-to-use nets that lower straight into the water.

  • Hand Lines – A weighted line with bait tied on; perfect for kids to try.

  • Bucket or Cooler – To hold your catch. A wet towel over the top keeps crabs cool and contained.

  • Gloves & Tongs – Crabs can pinch! Use gloves and tongs for safe handling.

  • Bait – Crabs are opportunistic feeders. Favorites include chicken necks, raw chicken parts, oily fish (like mullet or menhaden), or even bacon.
