Port Aransas has been a favorite of anglers across the state—and country—for decades. But on May 24, 2025, the town earned the official recognition as the "Fishing Capital of Texas" when Governor Abbott signed HCR 117.

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Port Aransas, situated on Mustang Island along the Texas Gulf Coast, has long been recognized as one of Texas' premier locations for fishing, attracting anglers from across the state and beyond; and

WHEREAS, Boasting a diverse marine ecosystem, the waters surrounding the island offer opportunities to catch red snapper, redfish, flounder, tarpon, marlin, tuna, and other prized species; moreover, the area is optimal for deep-sea, bay, and pier fishing, providing enthusiasts with a range of options; and

WHEREAS, Port Aransas hosts a number of prestigious fishing tournaments, including the Texas Legends Billfish Tournament, the Texas Women Anglers Tournament, and the Deep Sea Roundup, which is renowned as the oldest fishing competition on the Texas coast; and

WHEREAS, The city is home to a thriving fishing industry that encompasses guided charter services, bait and tackle shops, marinas, and other businesses, all of which contribute significantly to the local and state economy; and

WHEREAS, The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and local conservation groups have worked diligently to preserve and maintain the natural fisheries of the area, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy world-class fishing in Port Aransas; and

WHEREAS, The residents of Port Aransas have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the promotion, preservation, and enhancement of the area's fishing opportunities, and their efforts, along with the abundant coastal waters, have made the city a beloved fishing destination for a multitude of Texans and visitors alike; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate Port Aransas as the official Fishing Capital of Texas; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally passed by the legislature.
