Port Aransas Named Fishing Capital of Texas

Port Aransas, Texas, June 4, 2025

As of May 24, 2025, Port Aransas, Texas is officially the Fishing Capital of Texas. Governor Greg Abbott signed HRC 117 into law, electing the robust fishing city as Texas’ premier fishing location.

As a city once named Tarpon, Texas, Port Aransas was built by and for anglers. It is a city that has maintained elite fishing access, a thriving economy, and an unwavering tradition of excellence. Port Aransas uniquely provides a wide range of species and clean fisheries, marking the city as beautiful, productive, and incredibly special.

“Port Aransas has the best location, conservation, and environment for fishing. It is truly the place to visit, travel, and fish,” said State Representative Todd Hunter (R-District 32).

Thanks to its unique island geography, Port Aransas supplies abundant fishing opportunities. Multiple docks, jetties, and a gorgeous shoreline make it a haven for both casual and seasoned fisherman. The city also prides itself on excellent deep-sea fishing, with charters regularly venturing offshore for prized catches such as red snapper, sailfish, and marlin. With year-round fishing and a rich marine ecosystem, Port Aransas solidifies its reputation as a top-tier community for anglers seeking an unforgettable experience.

State Senator Adam Hinojosa (R-District 27) said, “This designation celebrates a community that truly lives and breathes fishing and honors its proud legacy along the Texas coast. It was a privilege to help pass legislation recognizing Port Aransas as the official Fishing Capital of Texas for the next ten years.”

As Port Aransas continues to grow, the city and its residents remain committed to preserving its natural treasures, nurturing the fishing economy, and providing coastal adventures for anglers of all kinds. “I am so honored and appreciative of our state legislators and the Governor to have Port Aransas receive this designation,” said Port Aransas Mayor Wendy Moore. “It not only recognizes the cultural and economic importance of fishing in Port Aransas, but it also supports tourism, small businesses, conservation efforts, and the continued growth of the local economy. Fishing is more than a pastime in Port Aransas—it's a way of life, and the community has invested deeply in preserving that legacy for future generations.”

With this dedication, Port Aransas proudly lives up to its new title as the Fishing Capital of Texas. To celebrate, Port Aransas Fishing Capital of Texas commemorative merchandise will be available for pre-order at https://www.portaransas.org/fishing-capital/ and the city will be hosting an official ceremony to celebrate the designation later this summer.
