Crested Caracara
About the Crested Caracara
Crested Caracaras are in the same family as falcons. A common subject of folklore and legends throughout Central and South America, the Crested Caracara is sometimes referred to as the “Mexican eagle.” It ranges into the United States to Arizona, Florida, and Texas and is commonly seen on Mustang Island. This tropical falcon often associates with vultures feeding on carrion of all types but it has a flexible diet feeding on insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.
